History of our Parish
The foundation stone of the first church in the suburbs from Richlands to Chelmer was laid on 28 April 1912 at Corinda by Fr J. F. McCarthy of Red Hill. On 3 November 1912 St Joseph’s Catholic Church Corinda was blessed and opened by Coadjutor Archbishop James Duhig. Since that time the Catholic Church in the district has expanded and grown, developing churches, schools and parish communities. Over more than 100 years, the Catholic Church in the Corinda Graceville area has changed and developed significantly.
- 1881 - St Patrick’s Church at Goodna opened and blessed. This church (later to be known as St Francis Xavier) served as the church for the entire district from Goodna to Chelmer.
- 1910 - Monthly Masses celebrated in the Corinda School of Arts.
- 1911 - Monthly Masses celebrated in private homes (Careys of Corinda and McLaughlins of Sherwood).
- 1912 - Blessing and Opening of St Joseph’s Church Corinda by Coadjutor Archbishop James Duhig. The church served the districts of Richlands, Darra, Oxley, Corinda, Sherwood, Graceville and Chelmer.
- 1912 - Corinda Church under the Mother Parish of Goodna.
- 1917 - Daughters of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart arrive at Corinda.
- 1917 - St Joseph’s Primary School Corinda opened and blessed.
- 1919 - Corinda Church transferred to the Mother Parish of Annerley.
- 1919 - Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Junior Boys Boarding School blessed and opened at Corinda (operated until late 1930’s).
- 1923 - St Joseph’s Corinda established as a Parish.
- 1924 - Ursuline Sisters arrive at Oxley – St Ursula’s College “Duporth” – boarding and day school for girls (operated until 1957).
- 1926 - Transepts and new Sanctuary added to St Joseph’s Church Corinda.
- 1930 - Former Church of St Michael and All Souls Toowong transported across Brisbane River, renovated and dedicated as Christ the King Church Graceville.
- 1930 - Christ the King Graceville established as a Parish.
- 1937 - Sisters of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary arrive at Graceville.
- 1937 - Christ the King Primary School Graceville opened and blessed.
- 1937 - Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Church-School Darra opened and blessed.
- 1941 - Our Lady of the Sacred Heart College Corinda, a girl’s secondary school for day and boarding students opened and blessed (operated until 1972).
- 1945 - St Patrick’s Church Richlands opened and blessed (closed in 1952 – building transported to Darra to be used as classrooms).
- 1950 - Christ the King Church extended.
- 1952 - St Joseph’s Church Corinda extended with new Sanctuary.
- 1952 - Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Darra established as a Parish.
- 1953 - Daughters of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart withdraw from Darra School.
- 1954 - Sisters of Mercy arrive at Darra.
- 1954 - Further extensions are made to Christ the King Church.
- 1955 - Congregation of the Passion arrive at Oxley - Regina Caeli Retreat (The Fort).
- 1960 - Canossian Daughters of Charity arrive at Oxley and commence Canossa Hospital Complex for the Aged and Infirm on the former site of Duporth College.
- 1964 - Our Lady Help of Christians (Mass Centre) opened at Oxley (closed in 1979).
- 1968 - New Church of St Joseph Corinda opened and blessed by Archbishop Patrick Mary O’Donnell.
- 1978 - The original school buildings of St Joseph’s and the parish hall are destroyed by fire.
- 1988 - Julia Cumming Community Child Care Centre is opened at Graceville.
- 1991 - A new Hall is opened at Corinda.
- 1996 - The boundaries of St Joseph’s Parish Corinda and Christ the King Parish Graceville are suppressed to form the new Catholic Parish of Corinda Graceville.
- 1997 - The new Catholic Parish of Corinda Graceville is officially promulgated on 13th February .
- 1997 - The Graceville Atrium of the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd commences.
- 2003 - Christ the King Church is once again relocated. The church is moved to the site of the former Convent at Churchill Street Graceville.
- 2012 - Centenary celebrations held for St Joseph’s Church.

- Eightieth Jubilee of Christ the King Primary School Graceville - 2018
- 50th Anniversary celebrations of the building of the current Church of St Joseph
- 125th Anniversary celebrations of the building of the Church of Christ the King - 2019
- The Presentation Sisters withdraw from Graceville Convent after 82 years of ministry in the parish
On Sunday 4 November 2012, the Parish celebrated one hundred years of a Church in the local area with a Mass celebrated by Archbishop Mark Coleridge. A book ‘Building a Church over one hundred years’ was produced for the occasion.
